Feb: Helmet Stickers, Noise, Roll Cages & Catalysts. etc.

The following information has been provided by our club scrutineer, Nigel Hoyle: -.

Helmet stickers
MSA: Some joker has tried to sell these on ebay. He has been warned, and all the scrutineers have been informed of relevant numbers and what to look for.

Snell 2005: These are also available if you know who to talk to. Helmets have been presented with these stuck in the wrong place. The helmet sticker issue will be policed rigorously.

Noise
The limits are being policed far more vigorously then ever, and there is only one way noise limits are going and it’s not up. Please Please Please check the regulations for sound levels for your event. They do change, and the limits in the blue book are MAXIMUMS for the events listed, your event could well be different.

Roll cages
All scrutineers have been told to look out for unusual constructions and told to warn competitors. I have just watched a video where a brand new works rally car was spotted at the Autosport show with a brand new cage fitted and designed by one of the UK’s premier roll cage manufacturers. The door bars alone would have failed scrutineering on 3 points alone.

Catalytic converters
All production based cars that were fitted with cats as standard after 1 Jan 2000, must compete with them not only fitted, but also operational as well. It is thought it will also cover all new kit cars, specials, both space frames and other types. The piece of pipe rammed through the cat will be spotted. Techniques are being investigated as you read this to ensure competitors follow these rules.

If you are in any doubt as to how serious this will become, in Germany ALL competing cars will have cats fitted. This includes ALL forms of historic racing/rallying etc. There is discussion on going as to whether Auto Unions and Mercedes from the 1930’s should be forced to run with cats on demonstration runs. Yes its that serious. The general opinion is that if motor sport doesn’t police this itself, it will be forced to clean up its act by others, and that means politicians, green pressure groups, and far more serious consequences.

Follow developments on this closely – it WILL affect YOU, and SOON

Feb 16th: Date for Rockinghams Stages 2008 agreed.
