Lynn Charity Stages 2004

West Raynham Airfield – Sunday 7th November

Report by Peter Wood

10 stages were on offer here, with 2 to be in the dark. The organisers said that they had found some new roads to use, and would cut back on long runways and man-made chicanes.

Kings Lynn had attracted an excellent entry of 86 cars for this event, including no less that 6 Metro 6R4’s!

The classes were as follows: E 18(!), D 13, C 30, B 19, and A 6.

The Club had three entries:

Car 19 Andy Corner / James Greenwood - Peugeot 205 MI16.
Car 66 Julz Coulter / Jason Hutson - Opel Kadett 1.6
Car 84 Dick Archer / Stephen McNulty - Astra GSI 2.0
Car 19

Andy Corner / James Greenwood

Car 19 Andy Corner / James Greenwood – a nightmare of a day – SS1 and lost power after 1/3 of stage, pulled over and eventually crawled to stage finish. SS2 and a repeat of stage 1. SS3 throttle jams open and break a driveshaft, another maximum! Decide to try and fix car and enter the Trophy rally from SS6. Typically, everything ok now and set 6th fastest O/all on SS10 in the dark.

Car 66

Julz Coulter / Jason Hutson

Car 66 Julz Coulter / Jason Hutson. 1st outing for the rebuilt car and SS1 is comical! Merge is straight after start and we follow the four cars into finish and collect a maximum after ½ mile! Pressure off and pass 2 cars on SS2. SS3 and Metro off in mud covered buildings section, at 10mph the surface is like ice! SS4 slid off road and bent rear wheel under car. Andy is a star with Oxy torch and crow-bar. “Andy could weld two bits of wood together!” said Julz. Decide to rejoin for Trophy rally at SS6. SS9 + 1-0 in the dark were magic, although exciting with no intercom, but finished 5th in Trophy, 1st 1600. A big thank-you to Andy C for all his help over the last fortnight – you’re a star!

Car 84

Dick Archer / Stephen McNulty

Car 84 Dick Archer / Stephen McNulty - around about 10 days before the event I received a call from Dick Archer, asking me if I could co-drive for him on the event. I met him for the first time at signing on to find out we were sharing the car, so it was car 24 and 84. It was Dick’s first rally for a couple of years as he has been racing Vectras. We were 11th fastest after the first stage, 26 seconds faster than the cars owner. On the second stage the head gasket went and that was the end of the day - the Car’s first retirement in 15 events. I will be at Rockingham with Dick Mauger.

Not a good day for the Club members at West Raynham, but that’s how it goes sometimes!
