Round 1 of the BRC Stars of the Future championship
took Mat Brennan and me to Dolgellau and the International Rally
of Wales. After nearly a 6 month break and having not driven the car in
anger apart from to the MOT centre and roll road, we threw ourselves
head long in to 5 stages of up to 16miles in length covering 65 stage
miles.
The rally covered famous stages such as Gartheiniog
and Dyfi as we followed in the wheel tracks of current rally stars such
as Mathew Wilson and Mark Higgins.
The first stage proved to be difficult as myself and
Mat blew away the cobwebs suffering a high-speed spin and mechanical
troubles resulting in us being unable to select 1st gear. After the
1st stage we were 7th due to the time dropped but were determined to
fight back.
After adjustment of the gear linkage between stages
we had a clean run through stage 2 setting 3rd quickest time over all
pulling our way up to 5th.
Over the 2 following stages after the 20 minute
service we started to really get in to the groove setting 2nd and 3rd
fastest stages times surviving an huge moment where a pace note was
missed and far too much speed was carried in to a corner.
Stage 5 was cancelled due to Mathew Wilson’s big
accident.
During this spell of hard charging we pushed our way
through to take 3rd place over all by 6 seconds from the combined
1600cc & 1400cc classes within the BRC Stars of the future and 1st
placed 1400 placing us level on points on top of the championship
table together with Suzuki works team backed driver and hotly tipped
favourite James Wozencroft.
The next round of the championship takes us to
Carlisle and the Pirelli International Rally where the daunting
challenge of the ultra fast “Killer” kielder Forests lays ahead and
hopefully an equally pleasing result.
I would like to take this opportunity to thank my
