Dick Mauger / Andrew Street |
Other Club members in attendance as Marshals, Service support etc were: Pete Wood, Richard Wood, Dan Corner, Julz, Andy
Cadle, Kathy + Nick Mauger and others.
The full entry of 104 cars was headed by 19 class E, including 10 Subaru (of which 4 are WRC), 6 Escort Cosworth, a 6R4 and
a pair of Mazda 323 4x4. There were also 3 Darrian and the quick 205 Abusa. Class D had 17, C a whopping 39, B 15, and A 14.
9 Dick & Andrew. Out in the new, blue, Escort WRC and it looked GREAT! Set 3rd fastest on SS1 but reported a
mysterious fuel surge problem all day - fine up to ˝ throttle, but loss of power until fully open then flat out. Dick felt
this cost him a full minute through the day but was 3,4,5,5,5,5,5,5, and won his class.
 |
|
Martin Snell / Steve Greenhill |
10 Martin & Steve. Broke the clutch plate in SS1, but out again for the thrash on SS5, only to be stopped by the
clutch slave cylinder giving up.
 |
|
Dave Nutt / Henry Whitfield |
19 Dave & Henry. Set 2nd fastest on SS1, only beaten by Peter Lloyd, but caught by the 6R4 on SS3 to trail by
4s. Took 1s back on SS4, and 2nd place overall by setting fastest time on SS5. Held up by WRC car on SS6 and shaft let go to
spoil an otherwise great result.
 |
|
Andy Corner / Jill Cotton |
25 Andy & Jill. Andy’s last event for a couple of months as he is in for a back operation on Tuesday. Set 14th
fastest on SS1 despite brake fade, but lost 5th gear on SS2 and dropped to 24th. Fitted Colways to back and climbed back up
the field to be 21, 19, 17, 16, and finish 16h overall and 5th in class.
 |
|
Richard Upton / Stuart Parkins |
35 Richard & Stuart. Set 31st fastest on SS1 but stopped on stage 2. Going again and 74 after SS3. Then climbed
63, 53, 42, 38, to finish 34th overall.
 |
|
Neal Cuss / Pete Gilham |
36 Neal & Pete. The Subaru now has engine rebuilt, and the pairing is reversed following Pete’s drive in the
Saxo at Wilbarston. A plug lead came loose on SS1 but still set 32nd. Pete said it took a couple of stages for the team to
pull together, but Mr consistent Cuss put together a run of stages to climb 28, 25, 24, 22, 20 and finished an excellent
18th overall, 5th in class and no damage!
 |
|
Paul Diamond / Steve Cox |
41 Paul & Steve. Following on from his great 2nd overall at Oakington we were in hope of another good result,
but not to be as a ˝ shalf broke mid SS1 and game over.
 |
|
Kevin Pead / Steve McNulty |
54 Kevin & Steve Big accident on SS1 when hit large pallet with big metal blocks on driver’s door/window/sill,
doing plenty of damage, and down to 85th overall. Window patched with plastic sheeting and out again. Climbed 62, 46, 37 but
front wheel broke on SS5 – the whole centre separated from the rim and tyre! Kevin said he loved it and will be back soon!
 |
|
Rob S* / Liz Kirby |
57 Rob &d Liz. Disaster on SS1 when they broke a drive shaft. Towed in after SS2 and out again from SS4 to end
but excluded from results.
 |
|
Geoff Clifton / Mike Winfield |
59 Geoff &d Mike. Geoff’s first go in the BMW. No front brakes on SS1 (overheated) and no 2nd gear on
downshift and set 54th. Fitted race fluid and things better, although the rear was sliding all over the place. Climbed
steadily 46, 40, 34, 30, 27, 25 and finished 23rd overall / 6th in class. Lost 4th and 5th on SS8, but loved it!
 |
|
Dave Keen / Matt Bateman |
71 Dave & Matt. Had a steady day with few dramas and climbed 56, 59, 56, 49, 44, 39, 36, to finish 34th
overall and 4th in class.
 |
|
James Walters / Duncan Gamage |
81 James & Duncan. Car conked out on the first corner, needing the team to jump out and dive under the bonnet.
Then flat out to cook the brakes “It’s going to be a long day” said Duncan. 93rd after SS1 but soon climbed 75, 68, 59,
50, 44 and very angry after being rammed up the A**e by a Nova! Flat out for last two stages and finished 40th overall,
13th in class.
 |
|
Shelley Nutt / Holly Bailey |
88 Shelley & Holly. This Vision school car was driven with gusto by Shelley, setting 55th on SS1, then 51, 47,
42, 38 (now 3rd in class), 34, 31 but the car failed within sight of the finish and the girls had to push it the last 50
metres to get 37th overall and 5th in class.
As usual a stunning event with free camping, a licensed bar for both days, a stonking entry and 90 great stage miles. Less
than half the field made the finish, but it was a blazing day (I’m still red!)
Bad luck on Dave Nutt, who was on for 2nd/3rd overall and frightened the 6R4 (and beat Peter Lloyd on one stage) and
to Shelley who lost 3rd in class and three minutes pushing the car across the finish of stage 8. Dick’s new
Cossy looks awesome and will win outright once the fuelling issue is sorted.
